Introducing our 2019 Ride Leaders

Theresa Gibson

Theresa started cycling in 2002 as part of her triathlon training. In 2006 she joined the Regina Cycling Club as a way of enhancing her training and never looked back.  Competing in multiple Ironman triathlons and road races has given her the experience to share her passion for cycling.

Theresa was a volunteer Director with the Regina Multisport Club and is the founder and Race Director of the Spoke n’ Hot women’s triathlon.  In 2012, Theresa, and her husband Mark, started Spoke n’ Hot as a response to an increasing need for coaching in women’s cycling.

Theresa is a Level 1 Triathlon official, a SCA Community trained cycling coach and STAC level one coach. Theresa recently started racing cyclocross and participated in the 2015 National Cyclocross Championships with her good friend and fellow Ride Leader, Erin Kiefer.

Wanda Barry

One of the original Ride Leaders, Wanda has always specialized in the absolute beginner cyclists who she affectionately refers to as her "ducklings."

She started cycling on Jan 6 1992 after she quit smoking. In 1993 she took part in the MS Bike tour, in '94 she created Zena's warriors, one of SK's top fundraising teams for MS. Twenty three years later and she is still participating.

Wanda is a NCCP certified Community Cycling coach, and is also the Safety driver for Spokesmen. She is a volunteer for pretty much every event that takes place in Regina.

Brianna Hodges

Brianna grew up biking and participating in almost every sport the small city of Melville had to offer.  In 2011 Brianna finished her first half marathon and has since completed numerous long distance races including a full and ultra-marathon.

After buying her first road bike, she completed a Tri-a-Tri then stepped up to a Half Ironman and the World Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon in Cozumel, Mexico, in 2016. She completed her first Full Ironman at Mont Tremblant in 2018.

Cycling is a passion for Brianna.  As a rider in Spoke n’ Hot, she gained skills & knowledge to develop her passion in a fun and safe way.  In her spare time, Brianna is a Level 2 Triathlon Official and is the Race Director for the 2019 Brent Gibson Memorial Icebreaker Triathlon.

Nicole Cripps

Nicole has been cycling since 2007. She has raced competitively in triathlon from 2007 to 2013 and competed in big events such as the Western Canada Summer Games (2011) and the Pan-American Championships.  She is now a competitive cyclist and has competed in the 2013 Canada Summer Games as well as the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.

Nicole joined Spoke n' Hot in 2014 as a ride leader and is excited for the new season and getting so she can meet her new riders.

Tarra Dubreuil

As an avid swimmer and a determined runner Tarra joined Spoke n’ Hot in 2016 with her trusty mountain bike.  It only took a matter of weeks and Tara knew she was involved in a special community with Spoke n' Hot.  She found herself in Dutch Cycle adding a new bike to her quiver to quench her need for speed.  She was hooked.

In 2016 Tarra completed her first Triathlon and has become a part of the multisport community.  Getting involved with the activities she loves found her quickly on the Board of Directors for the Regina Multisport Club as the Volunteer Coordinator.  In 2018 Tarra brought her coaching experience from the swimming world and her love of biking to Spoke n' Hot as a new Ride Leader.2019 is going to be fun!

Cindy Lamy

I like to think that I am exactly what Spoke n' Hot is all about.  I was asked to join by a friend, but after attending a tech night at Dutch Cycle I felt a little intimidated.  After some convincing I jumped in head first.

I enjoyed it and the people, eventually falling in love with cycling. I continued cycling through the winter with indoor training, came back for Spoke n' Hot 2014 and in 2015 I was asked to become a Ride Leader!

I've never considered myself to be an "athlete", but learning to ride, becoming a Ride Leader and competing in three triathlons has completely changed how I see myself.

Allison Szeles

Allison grew up riding her Canadian Tire bike on the grid roads north of Regina.  After competing in X-Terra Buffalo Pound in 2011, she bought a road bike to support the new triathlon habit.

Her cycling passions are marathon mountain biking and gravel grinders and off-road triathlons.  In 2016, she won the solo women's category at the 8 Hours of Falcon Ridge.  She also competes in cross-country mountain biking, road racing and cyclocross, rides a fat bike into the winter, and gets out trail running whenever she can.

Allison is President of the Offroad Syndicate Mountain Bike Club and is Director of Women's Programs with the Saskatchewan Cycling Association.

Maria Rupcich

This is Maria's second year as a Ride Leader. Maria grew up in small town Saskatchewan and two wheels meant freedom to explore the world. She has been cycling ever since her mom and dad allowed her out of the yard.
In 2006 Maria bought a hybrid and started commuting from White City to Regina. 2007 is when she got into the world of triathlon and took the See Jane Clinic and participated i
n the See Jane Tri in Regina, then went to watch an Ironman. Who doesn’t think it is a good idea to sign up for an Ironman with all this experience under your belt? Since then Maria has completed full and half Ironman races as well as many other triathlons.
In 2012 Maria joined Spoke n’ Hot to improve her cycling and learn to ride in a group. This is when road cycling became a passion of Maria's and she soon discovered that while traveling, a bike is the best way to see the sights. In 2013-2014 Maria firmly committed to the fact that she never enjoyed running so she stopped doing triathlons. With one exception, the Spoke n' Hot Women’s Triathlon. That race gives out HIllberg & Berk sparkle which is certainly worth running for! Conclusion: Cycling is way faster and cooler than running.
Some great female riders told Maria that ‘Cross is Boss.’ So of course she needed to try Cyclocross. Cyclocross makes you feel like a kid again. If you are into Cyclocross you might as well get into gravel riding. Which leads to more trail riding, so Maria bought a mountain bike. Then winter came so she HAD to buy a Fatbike to ride in the snow.
A girl can never have too many bikes!

Daniele Istace

This is Danielle's second year as a Ride Leader. Danielle began cycling after many years of commitment to the speed swimming world.  She is a Level 1 Trained Speed Swimming coach and has spent years coaching for Melville, Yorkton, and the Regina Dolphins.

After completing university and speed swimming with the University of Regina Cougars, she was looking for a change in sports.  In 2009, she began training for her first Olympic triathlon at Regina beach and never looked back.  Cycling on the prairies has been a passion for her ever since.

Danielle joined her first Spoke N’ Hot women’s cycling group in 2013. She is thrilled to be returning to our group of ride leaders this year.

Jessica Forrester

This is Jessica's second year as a Ride Leader and she will be riding with Paul Cutting.  When it comes to sport, Jessica describes herself as the Jack of all trades, master of none.  She has been involved in sport throughout her life and jumped into triathlon in 2015.  Since then Jessica has completed several triathlons.  Not one to turn down a challenge Jessica decided to take on the world of Spartan races in 2017 and successfully completed a Spartan Trifecta!

Once the outdoor cycling season is over Jessica hops on a spin bike to keep her cycling fitness over the winter.  This summer Jessica will be sticking to triathlons, running and cycling as an injury to her C6 vertebrae last November will keep her out of the Spartan scene.  If you want to try something new but need a partner, ask Jessica.  She will likely say "Let's do it!"

Alan Barry

I have had the privilege of being a Spoke n' Hot ride leader since its inauguration in 2012 and am also a ride leader for the Spokesmen Masters Cycling Club.

My cycling background, began in 1993.  After spending 45 minutes on a bus I decided to try cycling to work, I have been commuting daily ever since and average 25 km per day, rain or snow!

I have completed 3 Ironman's as well as many shorter distance triathlons.  Running has also been a big part of my life and I have been fortunate to qualify for, and run, the Boston Marathon.  In a fit of insanity I also entered and successfully completed the Sinister Seven Ultra marathon, running the 148km in 25:34.

With my wife, Wanda Bouchard-Barry I have also participated in the MS Bike tour for the last 22 years.  I'm looking forward to another season with Spoke n' Hot helping new riders enjoy all the benefits that cycling brings to us all!

Paul Cutting

Paul is a man of many hats, working to balance family, career and training.  During the summer months he competes in cycling events including on and off-road Fondos, mountain biking, and general cycling training.  In 2013, TSN followed him during the 2013 Subaru Saskatoon Triathlon as an age group competitor.  He was also sponsored by the Canadian "Powered by Chocolate Milk" campaign.

In the fall you can find Paul organizing trail run events and off road duathlons.  When winter hits Saskatchewan, Paul doesn't stop.  He changes his focus to cross country skiing and snowshoeing.  Again putting Saskatchewanians to the test by hosting a snowshoe series that spans February and March.  This winter Paul has stepped up his cycling game by hiring CIS Cycling out of Brooklyn, New York to coach him during the off season .

Terry Lazarou

Terry has been riding since before aluminum frames were the next big thing. There has never been a time where Terry has not had a bike in his life and often it has been two, or three or four bikes. Terry is one of the original Ride Leaders for Spoke n’ Hot.  He has competed in multiple Ironman triathlons, is a Knight of Sufferlandria, and rides year round on road, off road and on gravel with his cyclocross/gravel bike. This year, he is hoping to expand his riding explorations with bikepacking.

He volunteers for a number community activities including being the Lead (female) Bike at the Queen City Marathon. If there’s a stiff headwind, Terry is definitely the rider that you want to be behind because he pulls like a freight train!
