This is one of my favourite photos because of the laughter but it's also useful in showing what will happen tomorrow. You'll line up and Sean or someone will hold the bike steady so that you can clip in and be ready to go.
If it's your first time doing this it can be a little nerve wracking for a couple of reasons.
1. You really hope that the person doing the holding knows what he/she is doing ( they do btw).
2. That person's hands are really close to my butt... ( they are but, trust me, they're professionals)
The timer will give you a countdown and then you go hard for 5km until you see Neil at the other end where you turn round and come back!
Now, I'm not naming names ( Blanche ) but you will have a faster time if you stay out of the ditch when you turn round, and if you're riding well there's a good chance you may pass someone. This is the perfect opportunity to practice your "passing etiquette", :). If you're being passed, it is totally cool to encourage each other.
When you get close to the Finish line it is VITALLY important that you go hard and KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!! Not because it is more aerodynamic and will make you faster, No this is far more important...we're taking photos! as you triumphantly cross the line in a finish that will make Lance Armstrong wish he was a woman!! ( massive opportunity here for a bit of opinionating but I'll pass). ALSO, you need to call out your number that we will give you. Don't worry though, we will remind you of this.
Ok, so final thoughts...Shaved legs, more aerodynamic. Smart riding, pace yourself. Think about the wind, how will it affect you? Extra points for style as you cross the line. Have fun. You are your only competition.
I tend to be the noisy one, Theresa and the Ride Leaders are the real story.
