Well, it's -5c on Good Friday morning. Theresa is trying to convince herself that she is going for a run. I'm not sure that she will win the arguments but...
Riding season is just around the corner and it's an ideal time to talk about Spoke n'Hot in 2016.
Probably the biggest change is the decision we made to move our sanctioning from Sask Triathlon to Sask Cycling.
As I've mentioned before, our origin was in triathlon and the early majority of our riders were triathletes however over the years the profile changed. Most of the riders now are primarily interested in cycling and cycling events so it made sense to align with Sask Cycling.
Membership in the SCA is a mandatory requirement for you to take part in any cycling event in Saskatchewan and is also recognized across the country. So if you want to take part in an event in Alberta, for example, all you need to do is show your SCA membership and you will not need to become an Alberta Cycling Assoc member.
This move will also allow us to continue with our Ride Leader training. Over 2016 we will be training all our Ride Leaders as part of the National Coaching Certification Program "Let's ride". This emphasizes basic riding skills and will give the Ride Leaders a good understanding of coaching principles that are applicable to Spoke n'Hot riders.
One of our ongoing objectives has been to increase the number of female Ride Leaders.
Erin Edwards, who rode with us last year, has moved to BC to continue her Pilot training and Cindy Lamy is temporarily unavailable due to impending motherhood! The good news though is that we lost two but gained four! Mary Fry, Alison Worby and Andrea Ell have all volunteered to step in to the Ride Leader role on Monday evening and Adele Grundahl will be leading a Saturday morning endurance ride.
Mary started as a rookie with us in 2013 and has steadily improved in skill and confidence to the point where she feels ready to help our newer riders.
Alison is an experienced rider in recreational and competitive cycling and I expect to see her working with some of the faster riders.
The same comment would apply to Andrea, who also is quite active in cyclocross.
Adele Grundahl has been a competitive cyclist for many years. She has volunteered to start a Saturday morning ride for more experienced riders who are looking to increase their stamina over the longer distances. More details to follow..
Returning Ride Leaders for 2016.
Theresa Gibson, very experienced competitive cyclist, the brains behind Spoke n'Hot. Spent part of late 2015 learning how to cyclocross with her partner in crime Erin Kiefer, Both of whom decided to go to Winnipeg for Cyclocross Nationals in October.
The dynamic duo of Alan and Wanda Barry. Wanda will once again be looking after our very newest riders ( her "ducklings") and Alan will be leading one of the faster Groups.
Paul Cutting and Terry Lazarou, have been Ride Leaders from the very first Spoke n'Hot ride back in 2012. You may have seen some of Paul's tweets or on the CBC promoting cycling and snowshoeing over the winter. Terry successfully completed his Knights of Sufferlandria and should now be referred to as Sir Terry ( seriously, ask him about what he had to do to qualify. It's pretty impressive)
Shane McKechney. Seems to volunteer for everything including becoming a Ski Patroller over the winter.
Nicole Cripps. Team Sask cyclist, university student, ace bike mechanic..!
Last and definitely not least, Freddy Vandelinden. Has sponsored Spoke n'Hot from the very beginning and now leads the fast ladies in their weekly 'just how fast and far can we go today' challenge! Only person I know that can still talk non-stop at 50km/h into a headwind with a smile on his face.
We will definitely see the return of the Spoke 100. It was a huge success last year and this year we want it to be even better. Provisional date is Sun Aug 7th.
The Saturday morning ride with Adele G. More details to follow.

Mark and Theresa ( she didn't go for a run)
I tend to be the noisy one, Theresa and the Ride Leaders are the real story.
